24/11/2015 - SUBZ Project
Earlier this year Gift of the Givers Careline Counselling had a public screening of the “Girl Rising” which documented the extreme difficulties that young girls in developing countries are faced with to access basic education, which is every child's universal right. South Africa is no exception. Studies indicate that a teenage girl who cannot afford sanitary towels will be absent from school for up to a full term every year. One school term on average adds up to 55 school days, over five years this adds up to 275 days which effectively is more than one school year; thus setting her back in her education.
At the screening we learned about the SUBZ project which identifies needy schools and learners and gives a girl child a pack of washable pads and panties. This pack should last a girl five years thus allowing her to complete her schooling uninterrupted. We initiated this fund-raiser at our public screening and raised an amount that can pay for 20 packs. Gift of the Givers Careline invited director of SUBZ, Sue Barnes, to receive this donation.
