Northern Region Flood May 2016
The Northern Region of Malawi has been hit by floods which has displaced over 9,000 people in three districts of Nkhatabay, Mzuzu and Karonga. The flood disaster has also destroyed property such as houses, crops and household items, including food. The disaster, in this regard, has lowered food production leading to people not realizing enough crop yields.
Our organization, Gift of the Givers Foundation, has donated various relief items to 700 families from the 9000 people affected. The distributed items included 500 bags of maize flour, 100 bales of soy pieces, 500 blankets, 3000 plastic utensils, 50 rolls of plastic sheeting for roofing purposes, 18 bags of washing powder, and 50 bales of assorted clothing.
In addition, 200 farmers that have also been affected by the disaster in Nkhatabay district have been supported with 200 farmers’ packs comprising 10kg of UREA fertilizer, 10kg of NPK fertilizer, 2kg maize seed and 2kg legume seed for replanting during this winter season. In Nkhatabay, the floods have washed away approximately 30 hectares of farm land.
