02/2017 - Flood Relief in Chikwakwa
Gift of the Givers carried out a distribution exercise of relief items to 80 families whose houses were destroyed by heavy rains in Chikwawa district of Southern Malawi.
The heavy rains also destroyed the little food the affected families had kept for use during this lean period. This came on top of the already devastating hunger situation that has rendered the people helpless and distressed, drowning them into a life of destitution.
We responded with the distribution of various food and non-food items such as Maize Flour, Soya pieces relish, plates and cups to the 80 affected families at Masenjere area in Chikwawa district.
The state of hunger is still severe, especially in this part of the country as the area has, since the start of the rainy season in Malawi, not received enough rainfall. Due to inadequate rainfall, crops in most parts of the district have wilted. Our support of food parcels has come at the peak of the hunger situation. Both the recipients and Govt. officials who participated in the distribution exercise were very thankful.
According to Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee Report (MVAC), over 6.7 million people in Malawi are experiencing hunger due to prolonged drought conditions during 2015/2016 agriculture season.
Apart from Chikwawa, the current hunger situation has affected also many other districts including Nsanje, Mwanza and Neno in the Southern Region, and the hunger is expected to spill over into next year as the effects are already evident in many parts of the country, which include the destruction of crops caused by heavy rains.
