Bameira Water Pump
Bameira, a village 130km south of Nounkachott, Mauritania is a beautiful semi desert with sheep, camels and cows roaming freely. Besides houses, the village has a Masjid and a Mahdara (place of learning).
The village however has no electricity with the only water source being a well. They were in need of a new solar water pump and solar panels. Solar pumps offer a clean and simple alternative to fuel-burning generators and windmills. They require no fuel deliveries, and very little maintenance.
Over a period of 2 days Gift of the Givers installed a solar water pump and 6 solar panels. The pump now supplies water to 2 villages with a population of 200 people, whilst neighbouring villagers collect the water on donkey back. The total cost was R41 700.00 (1,500,000 ougiya).
