Cyclone Dineo

Cyclone Dineo severely affected parts of Inhambane and Gaza Province in Mozambique affecting 600 000 people. Gift of the Givers teams entered the country on 18 February and delivered aid in Tsakane Village, Gaza Province on 20 February.

The reception from the Mozambican Government has been phenomenal. Our trucks did not need any clearance at the border, the Mozambican military gave us an escort, the Director General of Inhambane met us and we have total co-operation from the National Institute of Disaster Management (INGC). Vodacom have given us a contribution of 500k, Unilever gave us tons of hygiene packs, Checkers have provided us with food parcels, Massmart and Proctor and Gamble are preparing an aid package. All will be delivered by our trucks from South Africa and distributed jointly by Gift of the Givers and the Mozambican Government on Wednesday after a press conference on that day arranged by the Mozambican Government in acknowledgement of our support.

Gift of the Givers has assisted Mozambique in 2000 jointly with the SANDF, 2001, 2006 and in 2012 again jointly with the SANDF.

The present aid requirements are huge and include tents, roof sheeting, plastic sheeting, food, medicines, water, water purification tablets, seeds, blankets and hygiene items.
