Double Flood 2010

In 2010, the Portuguese island of Madeira suffered two massive floods in quick succession, resulting in raging waters and devastating mudslides killing and injuring many people and destroying large swathes of infrastructure. The disaster was the consequence of an active cold front and an Atlantic low-pressure area over the Azores. Resultant storms dumped more than double the monthly average rainfall in an extremely short period of time, causing widespread flooding and mudslides.

Gift of the Givers Response:

In October 2010, we responded to the effects of the devastating floods and mudslides by presenting a new Mitsubishi L200 4x4 pick-up vehicle to the Red Cross for its use in assisting affected and cut-off community members. Just a few months later and whilst our team was still in Madeira, a second horrific flood struck devastating an already hard-pressed community, leaving chaos in its wake.

We dispatched five containers of relief aid to the flood victims. Members of Club Maritimo, a local football club, assisted with the distribution of aid items to some 2 000 families. This exercise was led by the club President.

The aid package comprised bottled water, candles, soap, cooking oil, porridge, beans, maize and Sibusiso Ready Food. In addition, we provided diapers and adult nappies, sets of cooking pots, paraffin stoves and heaters, blankets and toys.

The President of Maderia, Alberto Joao Jardium, met with our team, expressing his gratitude for the contribution made to the country in its time of need. Club Maritimo's president, Carlos Perreira, presented medals to members of the Gift of the Givers team as a token of appreciation. Madeira's Minister of Public Works, Luis da Silva, together with members of Club Maritimo also presented the Gift of the Givers with a cheque for more than R133 000 towards relief efforts.
