Congo Disaster Response

It has happened yet again, another African tragedy with more than 250 dead, 2000 wounded with varying degrees of severity including burns, mandatory amputations and major trauma. Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, represents a war zone with thousands of homes, businesses and two churches destroyed. Windows shattered four km away, civilians trapped under rubble, all the outcome of a fire that caused the accidental explosion of a munitions depot within the precincts of the city.  The paucity of resources, underdeveloped infrastructure and a legacy of civil war has compounded an already tragic situation.  Orphans roam the street lonely and aimless, more than 5000 people are homeless, in need of shelter, food, water and clothing, many others require urgent medical care. Hospitals are overrun, staff are overstretched and medical supplies have run out.  The Republic of Congo welcomes international assistance and have requested Gift of the Givers to assist. An initial  R5 million aid package including tents, blankets, food, water, medicines, surgical supplies and new clothing are being organised at our warehouse in Bramley whilst logistic arrangements for the most effective combination of flights are being worked out. Eleven medical trauma specialists and ten search and rescue personnel are on standby.  Africans have to respond to Africa as we are faced with another African challenge yet again.  Contributions in cash and kind would be welcome as the need is dire. Cash contributions into Gift of the Givers, Standard Bank, Pietermaritzburg, Account No. 052137228, Branch Code 057525.  Non-perishable items, medical supplies, dishes, linen, pot sets, new clothing will all be highly appreciated as people have lost their life's possessions and livelihoods.
