Gift of the Givers Responds to Kya Sands Fire

An exploded gas tank, strong winds and yet another massive shack fire in Kya Sands, Johannesburg, within a period of just over one year.  The damage appears to be substantially greater than last year with at least 500 shacks gutted and 2000 people affected.  Gift of the Givers teams have been on site since the incident occurred; all praise to the city firefighters who did a magnificent job in controlling the fire and preventing a far greater disaster.

Blankets and food were handed out by our teams last night.  We have total cooperation from the MEC of Human Settlement in Gauteng and the City Disaster Management.  Gift of the Givers has set up a facility from where all assistance will be facilitated in a controlled, organized manner.  Feeding of a hot nutritious rice meal is underway at the moment.  Two meals will be provided per day.

A special tent is being prepared by Gift of the Givers for students to come and study quietly in this exam period whilst they don't have any homes.  A generator, lighting, meals and stationery will be provided.  Teachers are welcome to volunteer their services at this tent.

The interest from the public is overflowing.  The following items will be of value to the victims: blankets, clothes, baby clothes, towels, linen, various food items, bottled water, baby milk powder, sanitary pads, disposable nappies, plastic utensils (plate, bowl, cup, spoon), bin bags and hygiene items.  It is evident that the residents want to rebuild their homes immediately.  Building material including corrugated sheeting, timber and plastic sheeting of whatever quantity will be highly appreciated.

Items in kind to be dropped off at Lifestyle Image Centre, corner of Mint And Carr Road, Fordsburg.  Contact Mustafah on 0826029854.  Apologies, no landline as we've just moved into this new facility.  Items can also be taken to the Gift of the Givers Logistics Centre at 22 Orchard Road, Bramley View.  This is off Corlett Drive.  Contact number 011 346 1087.  Clara, Mark, Helen and Sameer will assist.  Please note we prefer ALL items to be brought to the facilities mentioned and NOT to be taken to the disaster site to avoid chaos.  Team members at Kya Sands, Allauddin 0836677179, Saadiq 0825575071, Ekram 0836523516.  Also toll free 0800786911.  Head office in Pietermaritzburg 033 3450163.
