Gift of the Givers Aid Hout Bay Fire Victims

Gift of the Givers aid to Hout Bay fire victims is ongoing.  Tomorrow, Thursday, 16 March, 630 learners from Imizamo Yethu will receive school uniforms, stationery and food items at Silikamva High School.  Many school children have lost all school related items.  Education related supplies are an essential aspect of our response in this context.  Our special thanks to Discovery Medical Aid and its Vitality members that have contributed towards stationery in a partnership programme with Gift of the Givers.

Gift of the Givers was one of the early responders to the fire in Hout Bay arriving on Saturday morning, 11 March 2017.  The immediate provision of water was the first emergency intervention as all possible sources of water had dried out in fighting the fires. This was followed by the distribution of blankets and food items.  The reaction thereafter was mind blowing but not unexpected, it was a reflection of the true Ubuntu spirit of our South Africa - a massive outpouring of supplies and an army of volunteers arrived on the scene to serve fellow South Africans.  Tula Tula, a local community organization, that has partnered Gift of the Givers, have been incredible.  They have organized drop off points and directed volunteer efforts in distributing the thousands of items of clothing, blankets, linen, perishable and non-perishable food items, household and other sundry items that we received.  Gift of the Givers teams assisted in sorting the items, providing logistics and transporting 20 truck loads of supplies to the affected areas.  Further supplies and aour 32 ton truck from Johannesburg has arrived in Cape Town this morning.  Thus far 15000 people have been displaced and 3500 structures destroyed.

Contributions are welcome in cash or kind.  Roof and plastic sheeting, floor mats, blankets, linen, towels, new clothing, shoes, school uniforms, stationery, school bags, hygiene items, diapers, sanitary pads, foam mattresses, cutlery, crockery, plastic dishes, toys, sweets and food items (rice, maize, beans, oil, sugar, tin food, energy biscuits, baby milk powder, tea, peanut butter, jam, soup, salt, etc) are all required.  Cash contributions into Gift of the Givers, Standard Bank, Pietermaritzburg, Account No. 052137228, Branch Code 057525, reference Hout Bay.
