Western Cape: Areas in Water Distress Increasing

Gift of the Givers teams are having a particularly busy time this week. Demands for clean drinking water have increased from a number of areas in the Western Cape. The Paarl Municipality has called us into a meeting this morning to discuss their urgent water requirements. Drakenstein Municipality is sending us a list of "red" zones (areas in need of urgent intervention). Bottled water distributions will take place at Klapmuts Primary School at 1pm today for the whole community; tomorrow we will be delivering water to Agri Mark in Robertson; Thursday distribution at Cloetesville (area between Stellenbosch and Paarl). On 3 April distribution takes place at Sir Lowry Pass Village.

Animal shelters and several institutions in and around Cape Town are receiving water from Gift of the Givers on a daily basis.

In De Doorns our five boreholes will be ready to pump 600 000 litres per day into the town's reservoir system within 48 hours. Peak View Secondary, Portland's Secondary, Soyisile Primary School and  Impendulo Primary School boreholes will have their water pumps connected today. Drilling for a borehole commences at Vredendal School today.

To augment our water supplies 1500 pallets of bottled water are on the way from our facilities in Durban and Johannesburg this week by ship and road. Multiple warehouses in Cape Town are filling up rapidly but distribution of bottled water to areas in urgent need are also increasing.

In the days to come many more boreholes will be drilled at strategic sites to reach our initial target of producing 100 million litres of water per month from aquifers. We are striving to increase this quantity substantially.

Once again we convey our immense gratitude to the South African public, schools, various societies, road hauliers, shipping companies and corporates for the support of our intervention thus far. Our gratitude to Western Cape Provincial Disaster Management, Western Cape Provincial Government and municipalities, Cape Town City, SANDF and various national government departments for their co-operation in assisting Gift of the Givers in our efforts to bring water relief to people and animals under stress.
