Gift of the Givers was bombarded by the public with requests to help the victims of xenophobic violence. On 19 May 2008, we set up a collection point at Sandton's Village Walk where people were invited to bring their donations toward our mission to assist the many displaced, cold and hungry foreign nationals.

Many took a stand against xenophobia, primarily through protest marches and collection drives. "To me, the real spirit of South Africans has been shown. We are not a xenophobic nation", says Dr Imtiaz Sooliman.  South Africans, without hesitation, have shown their true spirit of humanity through the outpouring of goods, food, blankets and money. People were found queuing to make their generous contributions at the collection point.

In just a week, GOTG moved over R1 million worth of goods to refugee centres in Alexandra, Cleveland, Primrose and various other parts of Ekurhuleni.
