Distribution of Sweet Potato Vines

Alarmed by the effects of drought being experienced in Malawi, the most vulnerable people in the Malawi society are now eating maize husks as well as rice husks as is evident from the news article attached hereto.

Survey reports indicate that approximately 3 million people from many parts of Malawi, will be victims of this dire hunger crisis.

In response to the sad reality, Gift of the Givers Foundation in Malawi has embarked on a project to support as many farmers as possible with Sweet Potato Vines in several districts namely Blantyre, Chiradzulu, Thyolo, Mulanje, Phalombe, Mwanza and Neno. Attached are some of the pictures taken during the distribution of sweet potato vines.

Sweet potato is a relatively drought resistant crop and matures early than maize. Sweet potatoes are good in terms of yielding thereby giving farmers an alternative to maize as a crop for consumption since their maturity period is at 3 months or less.
