Wesbank is one of the poor areas in the Western Cape where there is a high rate of teenage pregnancies and poverty is rife.
We approached the principal of the Wesbank No 1 Primary School, Mr Greg Gordon, who was very accommodating and enthusiastic, he offered his assistance and the school's premises for this project. Letters were given to the learners for their parents and guardians with information about this project and the response was positive.
Roughly 300 children attended on Sunday and were grouped into different age categories, 10 classrooms were filled with children and each class had 2 volunteers. A curriculum set up by CPUT Psychologist, Nthabiseng Afrika-Mabuto, were handed to the volunteers. The Skills Workshop Project is overseen by Nthabiseng and assisted by Theresa Ely both of whom are very dedicated and eager to make a difference in the lives of our children. All stationer were distributed to each class and after the 2 hour session we provided the children with a hot meal, juice and chips. The kids were very happy and we are sure that next Sunday will see more children joining the workshop.
