Great progress has been made in preparation for responding to the floods in Zimbabwe. Total co-operation has been extended by the Zimbabwe Government to facilitate unhindered passage of all our supplies through the Zimbabwe border to Masvingo region where the flood affected families are in transit camps. Distribution will be carried out personally by Gift of the Givers teams. The Zimbabwe Government has allowed free and full access to any media wanting to cover the affected area. Deputy Head of the Zimbabwe High Commission in South Africa, Mr Samuel C. Mhango, with his team, visited our Logistics Centre in Bramley yesterday to extend a personal "thank you" and assist fast track the administration process. DIRCO has also offered all assistance necessary.
Two million rand of supplies are already packed in our vehicles and are ready for departure. Mr Samuel requested a borehole for drinking water purposes. We have authorised that. He will get back to us on the need for medical teams and supplies for the hospitals in the disaster region. Reports received from the ground yesterday indicate that the number of families arriving at transit camps is increasing and that food stocks will be depleted soon. The aid package presently consists of food, blankets, new clothing, mattresses, towels, personal and environmental hygiene packs, water buckets and intravenous fluids. We are still working on procuring plastic sheeting, tents, water purification tablets and sanitation items to deal with the problem of a lack of toilets. Mosquito nets may also be a necessity. Contribution of any of these items will be most welcome. Cash contributions can be made into Gift of the Givers, Standard Bank, Pietermaritzburg, Account No. 052137228, Branch Code 057525.
