GOTG Township Marathon 24 February 2013

Sport removes barriers, unites communities, increases team spirit, promotes health and generates a general feeling of goodwill towards all.

Gift of the Givers hosts the 18th Township Marathon, one of only two marathons in Gauteng regarded as truly "township", the other being the Soweto Marathon. Included as an official race on the Central Gauteng Athletics Road Running Calendar, the event takes place on Sunday, 24 February 2013, commencing at 6am from Eldorado Park Stadium and meandering through Eldorado Park, Klipfontein, Klipspruit West, Lenasia, Bushkoppies, Nancefield and back to the stadium.

Organised by an amalgamation of eight athletic groups in South Western Gauteng the event promises to draw a support of several thousand serious and not so serious runners. The Township Marathon has grown over the years from its initial number of 65 participants 18 years ago and promises to be the biggest ever yet this year comprising a full marathon, half-marathon, 10km and 5km event.

South Africans are encouraged to come together in a show of unity, light up the streets of the "townships" with our various hues and colours, build relations, understand each other, celebrate our diversity as humans and encourage communities including the youth, women and elderly to enjoy "healthy" living in a fun-filled way.
