21-23/09/2012 - CPUT EMS First Aid & Fire Safety
A first aid and fire safety course was offered by paramedic students of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), in partnership with Gift of the Givers, from 21 to 23 September 2012. The initiative was part of a CPUT Service Learning Project. Eleven community members from Lwandle and other areas around Strand attended the course. The Lwandle SAPS assisted in identifying appropriate community members to attend the course. Attendees included school safety officers and members of Neighbourhood Watches. Officers from Strand Fire Station provided training on fire safety and prevention. The paramedic students provided training on a wide range of first aid issues, including: Principles of first aid and scene management, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), choking, wounds and bleeding, fractures, strains and sprains, basic anatomy and physiology, burns, carrying of patients, head and spinal injuries, unconsciousness and fainting, acute illnesses and treatment thereof, shock, and calling for emergency services back-up. It was a very successful event, and 10 of the 11 participants passed the First Aid Level 1 assessment.
Catering for the 3 day workshop was provided by the Gift of the Givers.
