Rwanda

Civil War 1994

Between April and June 1994, some 800 000 Rwandans were killed in just 100 days. The Rwandan genocide resulted in the death of, mostly, the Tutsi minority. Initiated in Kigali, the capital, genocide rapidly spread across the country. By the time the Tutsi-led Rwandese Patriotic Front was able to secure control of Rwanda, by way of a military offensive, hundreds of thousands of people had died and a further 2 million refugees fled the country, exacerbating an already full-scale humanitarian crisis.

Gift of the Givers Response:

In August 1994, we were responsible for the collection and dispatch by ship to Mombasa and onward transportation to Kigali, Rwanda, of no less than 200 tons of maize and a selection of additional foodstuffs, as well as large numbers of water purification tablets and various types of medication.
