A prime way to ensure children remain in school is to confront the lack of adequate sanitation facilities.
Many schools lack toilets and numerous others have such dilapidated toilet facilities that they are not fit for use. According to the Malawi Government's Sanitation Policy, there should be one latrine for every 30 pupils. However, there are many schools with more than 100 pupils per latrine.
Gift of the Givers regularly constructs permanent, well-structured toilets at schools for use by both pupils and teachers. Included with the improved ablution facility is a change room, which provides access to suitable sanitation facilities for the management of menstrual hygiene.
