Food insecurity among destitute families means they are at risk of severe malnutrition. The poverty cycle perpetuates itself and we found that a holistic approach is needed to benefit both scholars and their families.
Scholars lack sufficient nutrition to aid their learning process and as they are unable to focus during lesson time, face an additional burden of repeating grades and, in due course, dropping out of school in some instances.
Previously we ran our own feeding scheme and later decided to support community-based organizations that run soup kitchens within the community and at schools. We respond by regularly providing ingredients for the daily provision of meals which, for many, is the only meal for the day. We increase the support during winter and Ramadaan, as well as during our disaster response.
