THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC is unlike any other disaster Gift of the Givers has encountered in its 28-year history. Such was the unprecedented nature of the virus, its spread and threat of death, it became clear that government alone was not going to be able to deal with it. Given that the pandemic constituted a health/medical disaster, the response by Gift of the Givers was both comprehensive and designed to cover both identified medical and humanitarian needs. As a leading disaster relief organisation, Gift of the Givers immediately made its resources available and became party to relief solution development and – as a locally-based non-profit organisation – opted to focus its attention on, primarily, efforts to assist in South Africa.

Gift of the Givers responded by rapidly developing and implementing a series of vital interventions, inclusive of:

  • Provision of medical supplies
  • Availability of medical equipment
  • Triage
  • Reducing the cost of testing patients
  • Access to water
  • Access to basic supplies and provision of food

We have delivered protective materials including masks, gloves, coveralls, Hazmat suits, head and shoe covers, sanitisers, reusable surgical gowns, scrubs, non-contact thermometers, pulse oximeters, intuboxes, triage tents, blankets, mattresses, pillows, hygiene, maternity and baby packs. We have provided medical equipment including video laryngoscopes and have commenced the roll out of seventy life-saving High Flow Nasal Oxygen (HFNO) machines. Our activities have benefited 200 hospitals and health centres throughout South Africa. Gift of the Givers R10 million refurbishment at Mitchell's Plain Hospital included converting a wing into a dedicated 60-bed COVID-19 oxygen facility, at a cost of R10 million. The month-long renovation has provided an immediate solution – and a permanent facility – for the hospital to utilise as may be deemed fit, post-pandemic.

In addition, Gift of the Givers set-up a 120-bed COVID-19 facility at Bhisho Hospital in the face of rapidly rising rates of infection in the Eastern Cape. The hospital, which was receiving COVID-19 patients from Fort Hare and other regional facilities, was transformed into one of the Eastern Cape’s dedicated facilities for COVID-19 cases and urgently required beds, screens, PPE and window tinting. Gift of the Givers was pleased to be in the position to assist with establishing the necessary COVID19 facility here, delivering 120 beds and mattresses and 200 pillows. We have carried out 20000 pcr Covid-19 tests nationwide having set up dedicated teams for this purpose.

Drought is a major challenge. Fortunately, we have drilled 400 functional boreholes in the last two years that have benefited thousands. Currently in the Eastern Cape our water tankers provide 550000 litres per week, Monday to Sunday, to desperate residents. The desperation has been more intense in recent days as water sources dry out.

Hunger is a bigger crisis than Covid-19. Our call centres, emails and staff are flooded with requests for food. We have delivered aid to areas where children are eating plants to survive or eat anything that comes off a dump site. Gift of the Givers have delivered 130000 food parcels in South Africa, and 40000 in Malawi, Namibia and Zimbabwe, collectively. In addition, we are supporting a number of feeding centres and delivering fortified nutrient products to starving children.

Thank you Gift of the Givers for providing basic services that the useless government cannot.

Thank you 🙏 Gift of the Givers

That's incredible! Thank you so much for holding our country together like you do. I wish people understood how blessed we are that you do what you do. Without your efforts, the situation in South Africa would be much, much more dire than it already is.

You guys are simply wonderful!

In #PortAlfred 📍, we met with 18 year old, Nosiphiwo Mgadi who lives with a severe disability and is completely reliant on her 78 year old grandmother. 👵 They share a mud house in a rural village just outside of Port Alfred and they have never had a bed, she sleeps on two single couches pushed together.

Our team immediately provided Nosiphiwo with her first comfortable bed with linen 🛌, as well as a special wheelchair ♿ sent from 📍, two urg branded blankets, bulk adult nappies and a food parcel. Her grandmother, with tears in her eyes thanked the team and she couldn't stop praising God Almighty, for such a miracle.

Simphiwe Mazibuko, 72, from #Ladysmith was overjoyed when we presented him with his very own wheelchair. ♿

Simphiwe suffered a stroke three months ago and is now completely unable to use his left leg. He would often borrow his neighbors wheelchair whenever he needed to go somewhere, and he was occasionally left stranded when it was in use. In addition to the wheelchair, we gifted Simphiwe with a food parcel 🥫 containing staple food items.

Mrs Thuli Hadebe, Deputy Mayor of the Alfred Duma Municipality, and Simon Gumede, District OSS Manager, are pictured.
Simphiwe was overjoyed and stated that he no longer has to worry. The municipality expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Foundation.

Sanitary Product Distribution to Tertiary Students in #Blantyre District📍

#GiftOfTheGivers rs 🇲🇼 handed out 150 menstrual hygiene products to needy female students in two Blantyre District colleges - Soche Technical College and C.E.C Polytechnic.

The majority of students whose parents struggle to pay for their education face difficulties in obtaining basic hygiene products. 🧼 The donation will allow young ladies to practice good hygiene for several months 📆 without depleting their already limited funds.

Our gesture was recognised by admin reps from the two colleges, who said it will help improve hygiene standards for their students and motivate them to attend classes.

In #Rietbron, one of the poorest towns in the #SarahBaartmanDistrict 📍, our team visited Branovale Primary School, as well as children from nearby farm schools.

We donated bulk stationery packs ✏️, cloth masks, cloth bags and sanitiser. Only a few children attending school wear uniforms as others cannot afford them. Sadly for most children here who will soon be entering high school have never worn a school uniform.

The principal expressed gratitude to God for sending us to their rural school and for providing them with all they required, and more. He discussed how the children and even the teachers would share stationery ✏️, which is extremely dangerous since #COVID19 can be passed from one to the other.

The principal was especially grateful for the sanitiser 🧼, saying that prior to our donation, they were spraying water diluted with #Sunlight liquid on the childrens’ hands. ✋

#GiftOfTheGivers current activities are a practical response to the challenges of #COVID19inSA and the carnage created by it.

The availability of #CPAP computers, surgical supplies and #PPE to health services is a priority in readiness for the third wave.

Since schools reopened, more than one million masks have been distributed to students, as the risk of disease transmission within the next generation is very real. The kit includes a school uniform, stationery and sanitiser.

Our primary target areas include delivering bulk food, hygiene packs and masks to institutions, and to the hungry and unemployed, funding #GBV programmes, digging boreholes, distributing water, supplying fodder, as well as sending food and medical assistance to different countries where our Foundation has a permanent presence.

All this is only possible through your generosity which we gratefully acknowledge. 🤲 Thank you!

South Africa is in the throes of a crippling drought. In the period July 2017 to the current, Gift of the Givers has expanded R235 million in drought relief in Eastern, Northern and Western Cape, Free State and KwaZulu-Natal. This includes the drilling of 330 actively functional boreholes, delivery of 625 truckloads of fodder, delivery and distribution of 250 truckloads of bottled water, deployment of 200 JoJo tanks, daily delivery of water through water tankers and the distribution of thousands of food parcels to farm workers and farmers, nutritionally enriched food to schools and pre-schools, provision of huge quantities of wool to set up highly successful income generating projects and the delivery of thousands of jars of cookies, also an income generating project, that has yielded R2.4 million in just four weeks, saving jobs, households, small shops and rural communities.

Cash contributions, fodder, provision of fuel, water tankers, trucks to deliver fodder, wool, or food items in kind are the need of the hour.
