As agriculture is the primary source of food and income in Malawi, access to safe and reliable water within farming villages is considered vital.
Gift of the Givers regularly drills boreholes in Malawi so as to contribute towards improving health and living standards, given that potable water not only directly benefits the individual, but also reduces reliance on rain for agriculture. We acquire water rights from the country's Department of Water Resources, which enables us to drill for water and to test it to ensure that it is fit for human consumption before handing over the borehole. Each borehole is fitted with either a hand-pump or - where resources allow - a solar powered pump. During the hand-over of boreholes, Givers of the Givers shares with the people vital guidance with regard to basic borehole maintenance, so ensuring that these life-saving devices are able to serve generations to come. We perform regular inspections at each site and facilitate repairs, where necessary.
