#GIFTOFTHEGIVERS Meet Catherine Phiri 29, a wife and mother of two, who comes from Mikute 1 Village under Traditional Authority Magang in Salima district. Her life took a painful turn when she was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and was referred to Ndimoyo Palliative Care Centre from Salima District Hospital. To help her eat and regain strength, Catherine underwent a stent procedure, that allowed her to swallow food again. However, despite the procedure, she struggled to access the nutritious meals that her condition required, especially as she continued with chemotherapy treatment.Four months ago, during one of her visits to Ndimoyo Palliative Care Centre, Catherine’s situation changed for the better. She became a beneficiary of the Gift of the Givers Foundation’s nutrition support program, which provides patients with Sibusiso high-protein supplements, corn-soy blend, and a basic food pack. Through this support, she began receiving the nourishment her body desperately needed.“I thought my life had ended,” she said with emotion. “Now I have found hope that I will survive this and become better.”At a recent nutrition clinic session at Ndimoyo Palliative Care Centre, participants including Catherine learned about the six food groups and their importance in maintaining a balanced diet. The session encouraged active participation, helping patients understand how nutritional supports recovery and overall well-being.🌐: http://www.giftofthegivers.org/make-a-difference : +265 888 23 40 00#GiftoftheGivers #MakeADifference #ForTheGreaterGood #HealthCare #NutritionalSupport #Malawi

#GIFTOFTHEGIVERS Cataract remains the leading cause of blindness in Malawi, responsible for nearly half of all cases among people aged 40 and above. A 2023 national survey revealed that unoperated cataract accounts for a staggering 59.8% of all blindness, a sobering reminder that preventable blindness continues to rob thousands of their sight.Determined to change this narrative, Gift of the Givers Foundation teamed up with Nkhoma Mission Hospital and Mlambe Mission Hospital in a life-changing initiative aimed at restoring vision and hope. Together, they mobilized resources to reach marginalized communities that often have little or no access to specialized eye care.To spread the word, the team launched a powerful awareness campaign, letters were sent to churches and masjids, while messages aired on MBC TV, TV Islam, and across social media platforms urging people to come forward for free eye screening and treatment.Screening sessions were then conducted at selected outreach health centres, churches, and mosques, where clients were carefully assessed. Those diagnosed with cataracts qualified for free cataract surgeries, others underwent growth removals, while those with minor eye conditions received ointments and medication on the spot. The response was overwhelming. A total of 1,594 people turned up seeking help and out of these, 251 sight-restoring cataract surgeries were successfully performed.Through compassion, collaboration, and skill, Gift of the Givers Foundation and its partners turned darkness into light, proving once again that when humanity comes together, even the blind can see hope again.🌐: http://www.giftofthegivers.org/make-a-difference : +265 888 23 40 00#GiftoftheGivers #MakeADifference #ForTheGreaterGood #HealthCare #CataractSurgery #Malawi

#GIFTOFTHEGIVERS Each year, on October 25th, the world observes International Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus (SBH) Day, dedicated to raising awareness and advocating for the rights, dignity, and inclusion of individuals living with these conditions. This year, Gift of the Givers Foundation, in partnership with Child Help and Neurokids Organizations, joined the global commemoration by hosting an inspiring awareness event at the Blantyre Youth Center. In alignment with this year’s theme, “Accelerate Action for SBH,” the Executive Director of Child Help, Blessings Chapweteka, emphasized in his address the importance of prompt intervention once a child is diagnosed with these conditions.Chapweteka also expressed deep gratitude to the Gift of the Givers Foundation for their unwavering support, which includes the provision of essential medical supplies such as folic acid, saline, catheters, and specialized chairs. The Foundation has also partnered with Child Help to organize specialized training for parents and children on Clean Intermittent Catheterization (CIC) and to equip families with vital financial and livelihood skills.A highlight of the event was the moving testimony of Daphne Manjome, a 24-year-old young woman who has successfully mastered CIC and continues to pursue her Form Four secondary education with determination and hope.It is estimated that Malawi has approximately 20,000 individuals living with SBH. Through sustained commitment and collaboration, Child Help has so far reached around 5,000 of them and remains resolute in its mission to extend support and empowerment to many more.🌐: http://www.giftofthegivers.org/make-a-difference : +265 888 23 40 00#GiftoftheGivers #MakeADifference #ForTheGreaterGood #HealthCare #Malawi

MINA goes to Malawi Netball Queens CampYesterday, the 14th of October, the Malawi Senior Netball Team, the Queens were introduced to MINA while in camp preparing for their upcoming friendly matches against Zimbabwe. The session introduced the players to menstrual cups as a sustainable, comfortable, and empowering alternative to disposable pads which most of them use.The youthful and vibrant team was so excited and receptive of the MINA Cup. Team Manager, Trisser Mailosi appreciated Gift of the Givers for the timely support, noting that the introduction of menstrual cups will significantly help the Netball Association cut down on costs previously spent on disposable pads.Coach Peace Chawinga echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that the MINA Cup will enable players to participate fully in training sessions, including ice bag recovery times, without the disruptions often caused by menstruation. The training marks an important step in promoting confidence, comfort, and performance for the Queens as they build up a strong team ahead of the Africa Netball Cup, which will be hosted by Malawi in December.Taking MINA to sports women is part of our strategy as Malawi Team to help mainstream MINA, menstrual health and normalise conversations surrounding periods. Most girls across the country idolise the netball and soccer players like Mwawi Kumwenda in netball and the Chawinga sisters; Tabitha and Temwa in football. As we continue spreading period positivity, we are hopeful that the reception will be easier as we have taboos surrounding periods in Malawi that hinder adoption. Once the girls in villages see their sports idols using MINA, they too will be willingtouseit.🌐: http://www.giftofthegivers.org/make-a-difference : +265 888 23 40 00#GiftoftheGivers #MakeADifference #ForTheGreaterGood #HealthCare #MenstrualHygiene #TheMinaFoundation #MinaCups #NetballAssociationofMalawi #Malawi

#GIFTOFTHEGIVERS For 71-year-old Maria Vincent, the world had faded into darkness for more than three years. But when the eye patch was lifted after her surgery, her world was illuminated again — and the first thing she saw was her daughter’s face.“The moment they removed my eye patch, I was able to see my daughter again very clearly,” she said, her voice trembling with joy.Maria’s moving testimony captures the spirit of transformation that defined the week-long free cataract surgery campaign conducted by Gift of the Givers Foundation, in collaboration with Nkhoma and Mlambe Mission Hospitals, in Blantyre. The campaign, which ran over several days, brought together skilled medical professionals and compassionate volunteers who worked tirelessly to restore sight to those who had lost it.Patients like Maria, who were diagnosed with cataracts at Dziwe Health Centre, were transported to Mlambe Mission Hospital for surgery a gesture that bridged the gap between despair and healing.By the end of the exercise, the results spoke volumes: 251 cataract surgeries performed and 1,594 individuals treated for various eye conditions. Each number represents a life renewed, a farmer able to return to work, a grandmother able to recognize her grandchildren, and a community member regaining independence and dignity. The campaign serves as a testament to the power of compassion and collaboration, a proof that when organizations and individuals come together in service of humanity, they can truly illuminate the world, one eye at a time.🌐: http://www.giftofthegivers.org/make-a-difference : +265 888 23 40 00#GiftoftheGivers #MakeADifference #ForTheGreaterGood #Healthcare #CataractSurgery #Malawi
