Some 70% of Malawi's population faces chronic hunger.
That translates to more than 12 million people living below the poverty line, surviving on less than $1 a day. Rain-fed agriculture is the mainstay of Malawi's economy, but with relentless drought and flooding, crop yields are minimal, leaving many Malawians severely food-insecure for more than six months of each year.
#GIFTOFTHEGIVERSAs hunger spreads across parts of Malawi, Gift of the Givers responded to requests from the people of T/A Mizinga in Machinga District, by providing food relief to 500 families as well as essential farm inputs to 378 farmers. Each farmer received 2kg of maize seed, cassava cuttings, sweet potato vines, 100ml of Snowmectin, and okra seeds at the end of July.End of September, in collaboration with Agricultural Extension Workers from Nsanama Extension Planning Area, we conducted a progress check. The maize crops are thriving, with growth ranging from knee-high to tasseling, while other crops are also performing well. Farmers have started harvesting sweet potatoes, bringing much joy and happiness within a short period of time!Emanuel Joe, the area's extension worker, expressed his gratitude for the support provided to the community which is helping people recover from food insecurity.Together we can make a difference: 🌐 : http://www.giftofthegivers.org/make-a-difference 📞 : +265 888 23 40 00 #GiftoftheGivers #MakeADifference #ForTheGreaterGood #HungerAlleviation #AgriculturalSupport #Malawi
#GIFTOFTHEGIVERS 💚Since 2020, Gift of the Givers has been providing continuous support to undergraduate students at Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) and Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHES). Our mission is to prioritize student welfare and address the needs of those facing food insecurity. In September, we held a productive meeting with the Dean of Student Affairs to review the progress of our food aid program. The focus of the meeting was to evaluate the current status of the program, identify any challenges, and propose improvements to ensure we continue effectively supporting needy students. The Dean of Student Affairs expressed her gratitude for our ongoing support, stating, “Each month, Gift of the Givers distributes food packs to needy students, improving their lives and helping them achieve their full potential in line with school rules and regulations.”Currently, the program supports 195 students by providing monthly food packages that include essential items like Maize Flour, Rice, Spaghetti, Tinned Fish, Eggs, Soya Pieces, and Cooking Oil.As we move forward, both parties are committed to expanding the reach of the program to assist more students in need. We believe that education is a pathway to leadership, empowerment, and self-resilience, and every student deserves the opportunity to thrive.Driven by the spirit of humanity and activism, Gift of the Givers remains committed to supporting 195 students at MUBAS and KUHES who are struggling with access to food. Through our monthly distributions, we ensure that these students receive nutritious meals, helping to improve their well-being and academic performance.Earlier this month, we provided essential food items such as rice, cream of maize, spaghetti, soya pieces, eggs, tinned fish, and cooking oil. #GIFTOFTHEGIVERS 💚Gift of the Givers Foundation continues to make a difference in Nsanje by supporting irrigation farmers in two schemes: Nyaphemebere, under Magoti EPA in Traditional Authority Mbenje, and Chimwalambangu, under Zunde EPA in Senior Chief Malemia. These farmers have received crucial farm inputs such as 2kg of maize seed, 1kg of bean seed, 100ml of pesticides, vegetable seeds, 10kg of NPK fertilizer, and 10kg of UREA fertilizer. In addition to these inputs, secondary canals have been constructed to improve irrigation, and the farmers of Chimwalambangu have been empowered with lead farmer and agribusiness training as we prepare to exit this scheme this year.During a recent monitoring visit, Timothy Batumeyo, a 49-year-old farmer, expressed his gratitude for the continued support: "Gift of the Givers has been a lifeline for us since Cyclone Freddy devastated our crops. They provided food packs when we had nothing and supported us with farm inputs to rebuild our lives. When we faced challenges with our irrigation canals, they stepped in again. Their support has truly transformed our community, and for that, we are deeply thankful."Gift of the Givers remains committed to empowering communities and helping farmers recover and thrive in the face of adversity.Together, we’re building resilience and food security. 🌾: 🌐 : http://www.giftofthegivers.org/make-a-difference 📞 : +265 888 23 40 00 #GiftoftheGivers #MakeADifference #ForTheGreaterGood #HungerAlleviation #AgriculturalSupport #Malawi
#GIFTOFTHEGIVERS 💚At Gift of the Givers, we understand the critical role nutrition plays in the healthy development of children. Malnutrition is a serious threat to infants and young children, which is why we’ve made it our mission to ensure that children under institutional care, such as orphanages and ECD centres, receive proper meals every day. A key part of these meals includes the nutritious Likuni Phala, a porridge that many families across Malawi rely on to keep their children healthy. Each month, we provide food to over 600 children in 7 institutions we support. At Courageous Kids in Mpemba, many of the children cared for are street-connected youth who have faced unimaginable challenges, including hunger and extreme financial hardships.Courageous Musasa, founder of Courageous Kids, expressed the impact of GOTG’s support: "Where most of these children come from, life is rough, and it's about survival of the fittest. Here, they get to be children again, and thanks to Gift of the Givers, they continuously experience the comfort of a daily meal. It is a big privilege for them—something many never get to experience."The food items we distributed to 7 ECD centres and orphanages throughout the month of September included Likuni Phala, Cream of Maize, Soya Pieces, Beans, Salt, Cooking Oil, and Rice. The centers we support monthly include BAHASI, Chikondi Orphanage in Ndirande, Courageous Kids, Njamba Orphanage, Enriching Lives, STEKA, and New Dawn.Through our hunger alleviation project, we continue to break down the barriers of hunger and poverty, carrying the torch of humanity and transformation. 💚Together, we can alleviate hunger and provide hope: 🌐 : http://www.giftofthegivers.org/make-a-difference 📞 : +265 888 23 40 00 #GiftoftheGivers #MakeADifference #ForTheGreaterGood #HungerAlleviation #FoodParcels #Malawi
#GIFTOFTHEGIVERS 💚Last year, Gift of the Givers launched a life-changing Goat Pass-On Project in Machinga and Mangochi districts, designed to uplift local farmers by giving them 5 goats to raise. Once the goats breed, the offspring are passed on to another vulnerable family in the community, creating a continuous cycle of empowerment.During a recent monitoring visit to T/A Chilipa in Mangochi, the results have been nothing short of amazing! Most of the farmers who received goats last year now have three or more offspring, marking a major success for the project. 🌱One of our beneficiaries, 64-year-old Alice Amidu, could not hide her joy. She proudly shared her journey from receiving the goats to becoming a thriving livestock owner. "I am so excited as all the female goats I received have produced offspring. I now have a total of 9 goats! Very soon, I will pass on the baby goats to another family, and the future offspring will be mine, along with the remaining goats."Stories like Alice’s reflect the power of sustainable development and the incredible difference this project is making in the lives of many. 💚Together, we are making a significant impact💚: 🌐 : http://www.giftofthegivers.org/make-a-difference 📞 : +265 888 23 40 00 #GiftoftheGivers #MakeADifference #ForTheGreaterGood #HungerAlleviation #AgriculturalSupport #Malawi
