An alarming number of people in Malawi do not have access to potable water and are, therefore, forced to drink contaminated water from unsafe sources.
More than 3 000 children under the age of five years die annually from diarrhea and other water-borne diseases which are caused by drinking contaminated water. Similarly, on the agricultural front, villagers are seriously dependent on unreliable sources of water, given that the country regularly experiences extreme weather shocks and droughts, resulting in failed crops, water shortages and subsequent food insecurity.
#GIFTOFTHEGIVERS For the first time, Gift of the Givers Water Development has increased the scope in Water provision by targeting the central region. Our team is currently conducting Water needs assessment in Salima district in the areas of Traditional Authorities Karonga, Salima and Ndindi. The assessments will help identify communities which are in great need of clean and safe water. The team visited villages which despite strides in development, people are still drinking wated from unsafe sources. There has been instances of cholera outbreaks in these areas due to the use of unsafe water. Gift of the Givers is working to bridge the gap between rural and urban areas by providing cleans and safe water through drilling of boreholes. To contribute towards our interventions, visit: 🌐: http://www.giftofthegivers.org/make-a-difference : +265 888 23 40 00#GiftoftheGivers #MakeADifference #ForTheGreaterGood #WaterProvision #Borehole #Malawi
#GIFTOFTHEGIVERS Access to clean and safe water is not a luxury, it is a basic human right. Yet for many families in remote parts of Malawi, it remains a daily struggle.Driven by a mission to restore dignity and improve lives, Gift of the Givers continues to expand its footprint in providing sustainable water solutions to underserved communities. In a major step forward, the organization is now planning to drill boreholes across several districts, with Mangochi District emerging as the latest focus area. This marks a significant milestone in addressing water challenges in one of the country’s most populated and water-stressed regions. Our Water Development team engaged with the Mangochi District Water Office—experts who serve as the custodians of critical water data and local knowledge. The meeting was more than just a formality; it was a strategic collaboration aimed at ensuring every borehole drilled delivers lasting impact.Together, our team conducted assessments to identify places for new boreholes across villages in Traditional Authority Chilipa.Mangochi District Water Office expressed sincere appreciation to Gift of the Givers for prioritizing their district, recognizing both the urgent need and the potential for transformation. To contribute towards our interventions, visit: 🌐: http://www.giftofthegivers.org/make-a-difference : +265 888 23 40 00#GiftoftheGivers #MakeADifference #ForTheGreaterGood #WaterProvision #Borehole #Malawi
#GIFTOFTHEGIVERS Gift of the Givers has intensified its commitment in Water Development through site assessments aiming at identifying places with little to no access to safe water.Despite ongoing efforts by various stakeholders, many communities continue to struggle daily. This lack of access to safe and clean water has contributed to outbreaks of waterborne diseases such as cholera, putting lives at risk. Our team recently conducted assessments in Mangochi District, under Traditional Authority Chilipa, where 22 villages were visited. During this process, we engaged with Area Development Committees (ADCs), Village Development Committees (VDCs), and community members to better understand the realities they face every day. These conversations and data collected are crucial. They guide us in designing effective, sustainable solutions that will improve water access and bring lasting changes to these communities. In 2025 alone, we drilled 19 boreholes in Thyolo, Blantyre rural, Machinga and Balaka. This year, we are committed to drill about 30 boreholes in Salima, Chiradzulu, Ntcheu and Mangochi. At Gift of the Givers, we believe that safe and clean water for all people can lead to sustainable development of the country. Our Water Development team continues reaching out in hard-to-reach areas to provide people with the most needed water support. To contribute towards our interventions, visit: 🌐: http://www.giftofthegivers.org/make-a-difference : +265 888 23 40 00#GiftoftheGivers #MakeADifference #ForTheGreaterGood #WaterProvision #Malawi
#GIFTOFTHEGIVERS The first quarterly WASH (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene) review meeting for 2026 in Blantyre has set the new tone for impactful collaboration and community transformation. Held every three months, these reviews bring together key stakeholders to reflect, share, and strengthen efforts toward healthier communities. This session highlighted powerful interventions led by Gift of the Givers in response to recent cholera outbreaks. From vibrant hygiene awareness campaigns in communities and Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres, the focus was clear: empower people with knowledge that saves lives.Communities in Chileka, Bangwe, and Ndirande also received critical support, including buckets, water purifiers, and soap, essential tools in the fight against waterborne diseases such as cholera.A major highlight was the Chigwaja Water Gravity System, an innovative project channeling clean spring water from Michiru Mountain to over 500 households.Blantyre District Council expressed heartfelt appreciation to Gift of the Givers for the continued commitment. The work not only addresses urgent needs but also contributes meaningfully to Malawi’s Vision 2063.To contribute towards our interventions, visit: 🌐: http://www.giftofthegivers.org/make-a-difference : +265 888 23 40 00#GiftoftheGivers #MakeADifference #ForTheGreaterGood #WaterProvision #Malawi
#GIFTOFTHEGIVERS Gift of the Givers was honored to attend the World Water Day commemoration hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development in Liwonde, Machinga district.Under the theme “Water and Gender Equality” and the powerful slogan “Where water flows, equality flows,” this year’s event highlighted the daily realities faced by women and girls, who often walk long distances carrying heavy buckets of water, sacrificing time that could otherwise contribute to education, productivity, and national development. These efforts are helping transform lives across communities by making water more accessible and sustainable. The ministry emphasized that water must remain a human right, not a privilege, and applauded organizations including Gift of the Givers for working tirelessly to make this a reality. The commitment to gender equality was further reinforced through leadership that understands and advocates for women’s everyday challenges.Stakeholders, including local leaders and communities, were also urged to stand united against vandalism and theft, which threaten progress in water infrastructure development.Water provision is one of the key focus areas for Gift of the Givers by ensuring that the communities have portable water. Since opening its offices in Malawi, Gift of the Givers Foundation has constructed 2 gravity water systems and drilled 213 boreholes, of which 199 are fully functional, 10 with articulated water systems providing water to over 100,000 people. To contribute towards our interventions, visit: 🌐: http://www.giftofthegivers.org/make-a-difference : +265 888 23 40 00#GiftoftheGivers #MakeADifference #ForTheGreaterGood #WaterProvision #Malawi
#GIFTOFTHEGIVERS Recently Gift of the Givers through WASH program stepped in to rehabilitate its long- troubled borehole at the institution. For some time, the water source had been unreliable, making life difficult for the prison and community around. The rehabilitation process was thorough and carefully carried out. The team began by replacing a damaged cylinder which had been one of the main causes of the borehole’s failure. They went on to install new centralizers and bobbins ensuring the internal structure was stable and efficient. Piece by piece almost everything essential component was renewed, breathing new life into the borehole. As the work progressed, hope grew among those at the facility. When the borehole was finally restored, clean water flowed once again something so simple yet vital. The prison authorities expressed their deep appreciation towards the support saying this will help providing safe water to both prisoners and members of staff.Through this effort Gift of the Givers improved health and brought renewed hope to the community at Bvumbwe Juvenile Prison. To contribute towards our interventions, visit: 🌐: http://www.giftofthegivers.org/make-a-difference : +265 888 23 40 00#GiftoftheGivers #MakeADifference #ForTheGreaterGood #WaterProvision #Boreholes #Malawi
