Human Development may best be described as the process of enabling individuals to grow and develop through the expansion of their own capabilities. In a developing world characterised by poor-quality infrastructure, under-resourced facilities and severely disadvantaged communities, never has the need for effective socio-economic solutions been more strongly felt.
We are dedicated to contributing towards the transformation of the environment, making available interventions for, especially the vulnerable, to impact on poverty, thus empowering communities and creating an improved quality of life.
Our team set up new shelters for displaced families affected by severe winter weather. Strong winds and heavy rain damaged or destroyed their tents. These shelters provide essential protection and comfort to families who have endured months of war, loss of loved ones, and limited access to basic supplies. By addressing this urgent need, the project helps restore stability and dignity during this critical time.🟢 How can you donate to Palestine? We have been distributing winter blankets to displaced families in Gaza as temperatures drop and harsh winter conditions set in. Many families are living in tents that offer little protection from the cold and rain, making these blankets essential for their safety and comfort.🟢 How can you donate to Palestine? Gift of the Givers Careline Counselling Services — World Mental Health Day, 10 October 2025Observed annually on 10 October, World Mental Health Day is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness of mental health challenges and galvanising support for those affected. It offers a crucial opportunity for individuals, organisations, and governments to reflect on the work being done in mental health, and to highlight the urgent need for improved access to care and support. This day is a powerful reminder that mental health is just as vital as physical health. It encourages open dialogue, challenges the stigma and discrimination often associated with mental illness, and promotes greater understanding and education around emotional well-being. In recognising this day, we move closer to a future where mental health is not only acknowledged but prioritised, where everyone, regardless of background or income, can access the support they need.Yet, the irony remains: although mental wellness is fundamental to human functioning, access to care remains a significant challenge. The ratio of mental health professionals to those in need is alarmingly disproportionate, and the demand continues to outstrip the available resources.Cost is another critical barrier. Private mental health services are simply unaffordable for the majority of South Africans, many of whom live in poverty. Even middle-income individuals often struggle to access these services unless they are fortunate enough to have medical aid. This is where Gift of the Givers Careline Counselling Services plays a vital role. We provide counselling by trained volunteer counsellors, and therapy by qualified psychologists and social workers at a fraction of the cost of private care. Often, fees are further significantly reduced or even waived entirely for those unable to pay. Naturally, some may take advantage of low-cost or free services, but this is the exception rather than the rule. What this highlights is that while many people desperately want access to mental health care, it simply does not make their list of priorities, not because it isn’t important, but because it is unaffordable. We strongly urge NGOs in the mental health space to advocate for increased government investment in this sector, specifically in the training of mental health professionals and their placement in hospitals, community health centres, and schools. The corporate sector must also recognise its role. As major stakeholders in society, businesses need to actively support mental health initiatives not just as their corporate social responsibility, but because a mentally healthy workforce leads to higher productivity, better morale, and improved performance. One of the reasons mental health is often overlooked is that its symptoms are not as visible or immediate as physical injuries or poverty. It is less tangible and therefore less urgent in the eyes of many. But this invisibility does not make it any less real, or less devastating. At Gift of the Givers Careline Counselling Service, we remain hopeful. Through our outreach to government departments, corporations, and communities, we aim to ensure that one day mental health receives the recognition and support it so urgently needs. When mental health services become widely accessible, individuals will thrive, and their growth will ripple outward, affecting their families, workplaces, communities, and society at large. And this is not just about depression or anxiety. It’s also about violence, trauma, and intergenerational pain.Gender-based violence (GBV) and domestic abuse fall squarely under the mental health umbrella and have been described as a silent pandemic in South Africa. This week, the media spotlighted several heart-wrenching stories: Cajee, sentenced to life for killing his wife with a screwdriver; a father who murdered his own infant child following an argument with the mother. These acts are horrifying, but they do not arise in a vacuum. Perpetrators of violence are often victims themselves, shaped by deep, unresolved trauma. As the saying goes, “Hurt people, hurt people.”South Africa continues to carry the burden of its brutal past apartheid, systemic violence, inequality, and now faces the new trauma of corruption, poverty, and broken institutions. We speak of generational trauma, and rightly so. Unless we address this collective psychological pain, it will echo into future generations.Mental health must become a core component of South Africa’s vision for progress and prosperity. Without it, we remain in the shadows individually and collectively. And this is not the government’s responsibility alone. Every sector — health, education, civil society, business, and politics — shares in the duty of restoring our nation’s emotional well-being.Let us remember:“The most powerful form of humanitarian aid may just be a safe space to tell your story. Broken bones can heal in weeks, houses can be rebuilt in months — but trauma, if ignored, can last a lifetime.”Zohra Sooliman Project Coordinator Gift of the Givers Careline Counselling ServicesTo contribute towards our interventions visit: 🌐 : http://www.giftofthegivers.org/make-a-difference 📞 : 0800 786 911#GiftoftheGivers #MakeADifference #ForTheGreaterGood #HumanDevelopment #Careline #WorldMentalHealthDay #YourMentalHealthMatters #SA #SouthAfrica
