Gift of the Givers Expands Support in East London Floods.
The death toll from the Eastern Cape floods stands at fourteen currently, this is alarming and indicative of the ferocity of the flood as evidenced by the substantive physical damage to informal homes and major loss of contents. Hundreds of families are displaced or living in sub-standard water logged, muddy dwellings. The inhabitants are distraught, traumatised, heartbroken and dejected, there is no way they will be able to replace even a pair of socks given their economic circumstances.
Gift of the Givers has intervened and were immediately on site assisting as best we could and watching desperate people try in vain to save their possessions acquired over years of stressful living. We will expand our assistance and provide building material for reconstruction of damaged informal homes, dispatch building teams to repair health facilities, allocate funds for funeral support, send in volunteers for trauma counselling, continue with the provision of hot meals, food parcels, mattresses, blankets, sanitary pads, diapers, hygiene packs and new clothing, these will be followed by sweet packs, toys, stationery and school uniforms.
