Thousands of South African families are food insecure and lack a regular and adequate supply of food to sustain them. These destitute families are at risk of severe malnutrition, and related illnesses, as well as the social ills that stem from poverty that keep them in a position of need.
During the month of Ramadan, both Zakaat recipients, as well as the general poor, receive food parcels and hot meals. Ramadan is a month of spiritual enrichment, focusing on prayer, awareness of the plight of those in difficulty, and serving fellow humans unconditionally. The hunger and thirst experienced during fasting is an exercise meant to relate to the circumstances of the less fortunate around us. Muslims increase charitable acts in the month of Ramadan for the benefit of all humankind.
Preparations commence before Ramadaan, ensuring that the food supplies are available and that beneficiaries are identified in time for the fasting month. The food parcel provides enough sustenance for suhoor and iftaar for the month.
