We are all dependent on water for life… it’s the very necessary foundation for our growth and development. However, it is a scarce and dwindling resource in many areas of the world, and especially South and sub-Saharan Africa. A need exists to ensure people become increasingly responsible about saving and utilising water efficiently.
When disaster strikes, water takes on even greater importance, leading to our organisation having played a necessarily active role in assisting under-resourced communities secure access to safe, potable water and hygienic sanitation facilities, an undertaking against which we have delivered since the inception of Gift of the Givers.
From drilling boreholes and installing rainwater harvesting operations, to establishing purification systems and distributing bottled water, we have the flexibility to rapidly adapt to a community’s requirements, delivering water provision solutions which most appropriately ensure the sustainability of life.
Gift of the Givers @MinaFoundation division was invited to participate in an @ImplatsMining and Rotary Action Group for Family Health and AIDS Prevention #RFHA Initiative to educate the community about πΊ #menstrual #hygiene. The outcomes were excellent with 700 Mina Cups distributed at the event at no cost. The #MinaCup is manufactured and funded by Gift of the Givers, superbly managed by Zaakira Mahomed (who initiated this project several years ago) and now has brought it under the wing of Gift of the Givers. To contribute towards our interventions, visit: π : http://www.giftofthegivers.org/make-a-difference π : 0800 786 911 #GiftoftheGivers #MakeADifference #ForTheGreaterGood #Healthcare #MinaFoundation #ImplatsMining #RotaryActionGroup #MenstrualHealth #Menstruation #PeriodPoverty #SA #SouthAfrica #Africa
Meet one of Gift of the Givers team members and a Medical Hero π Dr Livan Meneses-Turino - a #Cuban π¨πΊ qualified Orthopaedic #Surgeon who came to South Africa in 2001 as part of a Cuban-South African collaboration. He was deployed to #Zululand, tasked to establish an #Orthopaedic service to serve the rural community. He served as Head of Department at Benedictine Hospital until 2006. He was recruited to Northdale Hospital in 2006 - to alleviate the pressure of increased Orthopaedic trauma patients at Greys Hospital, hence allowing for registrar academic training which had been severely curtailed due to the massive trauma workload. This allowed for academic programme at Greys Hospital to be implemented.Under his stewardship, Dr Turino has established an accredited regional service π at Northdale Hospital. He has committed extensive time and effort to outreach programmes throughout KwaZulu-Natal. He is passionate about teaching and skills transfer for junior consultants and medical officers, but has also mentored several registrars who are today specialists in public and private sector. He provides expertise for acetabular and pelvic reconstructive surgery to various public and private sector practices across the province, Eastern Cape and Gauteng. He continues to support the Pietermaritzburg Metropolitan Complex in his capacity as Head of Department of Orthopaedics at Northdale Hospital, but also has been appointed as the Acting Medical Manager of Northdale Hospital with frequent periods of acting CEO of the institution. To contribute towards our interventions, visit: π : http://www.giftofthegivers.org/make-a-difference π : 0800 786 911 #GiftoftheGivers #MakeADifference #ForTheGreaterGood #Healthcare #VolunteerDoctors #MedicalHeroes #NorthdaleHospital #Pietermaritzburg #KwaZuluNatal #SA #SouthAfrica #Africa
