Malawians face a scarcity of potable water and when flooding occurs, an already dire situation is exacerbated when water sources are damaged and become contaminated.
Many people, in desperation, are forced to consume this unsafe water, significantly increasing their vulnerability, given that they may well have already their lost homes, property and livelihoods to the floods.
As part of our emergency response, Gift of the Givers provides water purification sachets and water filters to affected communities, enabling people to purify water, making it safe for drinking. This not only saves lives, in view of the fact that the risk of contracting water-borne diseases is reduced, but assists in restoring a degree of dignity within community members who have lost everything to the disaster.
