One of the great joys we have at Gift of the Givers is the fact that our activities are supported nationally by diverse cultural, sporting, racial and religious groupings. The medical volunteers who accompany us on our disaster missions are also representative of our rainbow nation. This kind of diversification allows us to understand and learn from each other, share common values, respect differences of opinion on various issues and yet have a harmonious co-existence as humankind irrespective of the grouping we are affiliated to.
It is in this spirit that we would like to share information with all our subscribers on projects we do in Ramadaan which commences in South Africa this Wednesday. The period of Fasting is from sunrise to sunset with total abstinence from food and drink. The emphasis is on self reflection, good conduct, strengthening of moral and ethical values, harmonious co-existence with all of humanity and to understand, through fasting, the hunger pangs of those who don't have anything to eat.
We are encouraged to increase our charitable activities this month and exhorted to supply provisions for a fasting person who has no resources for that purpose. Accordingly, without reducing any of our daily usual activities, which you are all aware of through facebook, twitter and the diary of events page on our website, we provide meals for fasting persons to the extent we can in select countries. This year the countries selected include South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Mauritania, Ethiopia, Somalia, Pakistan, Phillipines, Syria, Yemen and Palestine.
In addition, we will handover the first 15 houses to Alex residents on 18 July (Mandela Day), which co-incidentally falls in Ramadaan. A special "thank you" to Vodacom who have sponsored these first 15 houses; other companies and groupings are most welcome to participate in the construction of the remaining 54 houses which will be ready in 2 months time.
Ramadaan Mubarak (blessings) to all.
