29/05/2014 - Winter Warmth Launch in Cape Town
On Thursday 29th May Gift of the Givers Cape Town Branch launched their Winter Warmth 2014 in association with Radio VOC 91.3 FM at the Eikestad Hall in Cloetesville, Stellenbosch. This area was chosen due to its poverty and the high unemployment rate. With the assistance of the Stellenbosch Councilor Valerie Fernandez, Mr Paul Biscomb and the Stellenbosch Municipality Law Enforcement, we have done extensive research and handed out 1000 coupons to the poorest of the poor. In these poor areas it is impossible to assist all, although we would love to, therefore we concentrated largely on the elders, disabled and children. We therefore handed out coupons prior to the launch of Winter Warmth.
The launch started at 2pm but the community arrived in the morning with their coupons and ID documents, waiting patiently and orderly in long queues for us to open the doors to Eikestad Hall. The hall was packed to capacity with young, old and physically challenged. Hot Soup, Bread and Oranges were served to all. 200 elders received a huge Food Parcel with 5kg rice and a Warm Blanket, 500 Community Gift Packs consisting of Food and Warm Blankets and 300 Kids Packs consisting of Sweets, Fruit and Nutrition Milk. Two physically challenged elders were brought to tears when they received their new wheel chairs.
The opening started with a prayer from one of the Community Leaders, and a welcome by Councillor Valerie Fernandez thereafter the community was addressed by the speaker of the Stellenbosch Municipality, Mr Cyril Jooste. In attendance were members of the South African Police Service, Flying Squad and Tactical Task. The radio station, Voice of the Cape 91.3 FM commenced broadcasting live from 2pm - 4pm. Other media present were Stellenbosch Gazette, Rivier Nuus, Die Burger, Stellenbosch Magazine and Municipal Quarter.
In the Cloetesville area music classes is being held after school to keep the youth occupied and off the streets by Hurgen Cornelson, a drama teacher. To show our appreciation for what he is doing for the youth in Cloetesville we surprised him with a much needed CD Player to simplify his task. The day clinic on the premises “Aan Het Pad” received 2 Boxes of Sibusiso Ready Food Supplement and 6 Boxes of Nestle Mom Nutrition.
At the Eikestad Hall young and old was overwhelmed with tears, smiles and utterings of their appreciation as the event came to an end.
