School Renovation

A vast contrast exists among public schools within higher earning communities, and schools within poor, or rural communities. The poor are hard hit by the lack of basic infrastructure, learning materials, a comprehensive staff compliment, uniforms and extra-curricular activities.

One of the schools recently supported was Estcourt Secondary School. The school had their matric block of classrooms ravaged by fire resulting from a freak lightning storm. The block consisted of four classrooms. The building was gutted and only the external walls remained. The School Management team and Governing Body set out in earnest to raise funds and secure donations to rebuild the damaged block of classrooms. Despite casting their nets wide, they received no outside assistance.

Gift of the Givers recognises that a conducive learning environment is imperative for the development of the child and established a school renovation intervention within our Education Support project. Through this initiative we have refurbished a number of schools by providing fencing, paved pathways, fixed roofing and provided furniture among other things.

For Estcourt Secondary, since the external walls were still in place, Gift of the Givers responded by replacing the roof, tiling, painting and establishing electrical infrastructure.
