NOURISHING LIVES IN MALAWI

“TOGETHER, WE PROVIDE NUTRITIOUS FOOD TO IMPOVERISHED CHILDREN AND FAMILIES AROUND THE WORLD...AND AROUND THE CORNER”

Some 70% of Malawi's population faces chronic hunger.

That translates to more than 12 million people living below the poverty line, surviving on less than $1 a day. Rain-fed agriculture is the mainstay of Malawi's economy, but with relentless drought and flooding, crop yields are minimal, leaving many Malawians severely food-insecure for more than six months of each year.

In the heart of Balaka, T/A Mphimbi, the sight of women and young girls lifting buckets of the bitter fruit Nyika paints a picture of desperation. Overshadowed by poverty and starvation, hundreds of households struggle to find food for survival. The gloomy faces of the young reflect lost hope and unfulfilled dreams. Many children can't attend school due to severe hunger, and residents resort to drinking from stagnant rivers, risking waterborne diseases like cholera. The situation is dire, but Gift of the Givers heard their cries.Responding swiftly, we distributed 300 essential food parcels in T/A Phalula and T/A Mphimbi, ensuring that families have sustenance. Benson Break, a resident, narrates the struggles: "Nyika is our only accessible food...since Cyclone Freddy, our lives have changed for the worst drastically." In the tapestry of life, the stories of Mphatso and Bertha Sadik weave a narrative of courage and resilience. Born with albinism, their journey took a challenging turn 15 years ago when they lost both parents to a tragic accident. Raised by aging grandparents in Lirangwe T/A Lundu, Blantyre rural, life became increasingly difficult. Recognizing the uphill battle, Mphatso decided to venture into urban life, eventually bringing his sister Bertha along. Faced with the harsh realities of financial strain, limited access to education, and vulnerable living conditions, their plight came to our attention through Sub Inspector Gerald Kandaya of Bangwe Police Station.Responding swiftly to their needs, Gift of the Givers stepped in. Our recent delivery of Maize flour, Soya Pieces, Tinned Fish, Cooking oil, and Salt provides immediate relief. But our commitment goes beyond the present challenges. We are also supporting the siblings with funds to secure a safer and more stable residence. Navigating the challenges posed by the prevailing dry spell in the southern region of Malawi, Gift of the Givers remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting farmers. Our ongoing efforts involve closely monitoring rainfed crops in collaboration with dedicated extension workers across various districts. Recently, we visited Mangochi in Traditional Authority Chilipa, where farmers planted their crops on different dates in response to the onset of rains. Through observations and insightful discussions with farmers like Abiti Daiman, aged 54, we've learned about the crucial advantage of heeding early warning messages issued by the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological. Abiti Daiman shared, "During distribution, we were advised by our extension workers that this year would face a dry spell. We need to take extra care as we plan to plant our crops, and you can see the difference in our fields compared to our fellow farmers." On World Hunger Day last year, Gift of the Givers Foundation took a pledge to stand by families grappling with the ongoing hunger crisis at Makata in Blantyre Rural. True to our promise, we recently reached out to targeted individuals, offering vital food items to alleviate the pressing need exacerbated by the poor harvest of the last growing season. In this final distribution at Makata ground near the hospital, 130 beneficiaries were supported. The hunger situation in this area has intensified, leaving many households without food. Among the beneficiaries, eighty were from the community, while fifty were clients from the Nutritional Care Support and Treatment program. Each recipient received a package containing a 10 kg bag of cream of maize, ten packets of Soya pieces, one packet of salt, and two tablets of soap. The impact of our support is profoundly felt by individuals like Effy Malizani, aged eighty-nine from Chanika Village T/A Makata, who expressed gratitude for the timely assistance. She shared that she had endured nearly three days without eating Nsima, and the donation came just in time, as if the Gift of the Givers team understood the challenges she faced at home.Mr. Kazembe, the HSA for the Makata area, extended heartfelt thanks to Gift of the Givers, acknowledging the organization's consistent assistance to the vulnerable in the community. Agriculture stands as the cornerstone of growth in Malawi, constituting approximately 37% of GDP, employing 80% of the labour force, and contributing significantly to foreign exchange earnings. Sesame, a vital cash crop in the Lower Shire region, is cultivated for its seeds, primarily used as a cooking oil source and an ingredient in various foods. Recognizing the challenges faced by local farmers due to the absence of formal markets, Gift of the Givers has joined hands with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to bolster sesame production. This year, we embarked on a collaborative effort to support farmers in Chikwawa, providing sesame seeds and fostering an organized approach to farming. A total of 3,700 farmers in Mitole and Mikalango Extension Planning Areas have received support through organized clubs of no more than 30 farmers each. In a recent monitoring visit to Mitole, we observed promising growth, with many farmers successfully cultivating the crop, despite challenges posed by a delayed translating process amid the ongoing dry spell.A heartfelt commendation comes from a 48-year-old Group Village Ntondeza in Traditional Authority Katunga, expressing gratitude for the seed support. He encourages fellow farmers to nurture their crops diligently. #GIFTOFTHEGIVERS💚Agriculture stands as the cornerstone of growth in Malawi, constituting approximately 37% of GDP, employing 80% of the labour force, and contributing significantly to foreign exchange earnings. The unwavering partnership between One Nation UK and Gift of the Givers continues to make a transformative impact on hundreds of vulnerable families in Malawi. Together, we've empowered communities, constructed secure homes for the most vulnerable, and witnessed the heartwarming change brought about by crucial interventions. Our collective efforts persist in liberating households from the relentless hunger crisis. In a recent initiative, One Nation provided hot meals to an overwhelming 800 people in Chilomoni and Mataka. Through the One Nation Jumuah Feed program, families received the privilege of a free hot meal—400 served at the newly constructed Rizwaan Masjid in Makata and another 400 at Chilomoni Masjid.Amidst the challenging dry spell affecting maize crops across the country, these hot meals have become a beacon of hope in both communities. This act of generosity not only nourishes those in need but also stands as a flagship of humanity.Sheikh Imedu Osman expressed gratitude, saying, “A lot of people are suffering from the hunger crisis. There is so much hunger in this country, so we would like to thank One Nation for this very kind gesture. It is not a small thing to give out a free meal during these challenging economic times. May Allah bless you all at Gift of the Givers and at One Nation. Alhamdulillah One Nation for the Hot Meals.”Our commitment to alleviating hunger and fostering humanity remains steadfast. Simogane Musa, a 54-year-old community member, expressed deep appreciation during the assessment of the rainfed cropping period. "Every month, we receive food packs, the organization supports us with annual farm inputs, and I am also a beneficiary of livestock – five goats," shares Simogane. With the application of both fertilizer and livestock manure, he anticipates a bountiful harvest. 🌾💙 Gift of the Givers is sowing the seeds of change, fostering sustainable agriculture and empowering communities. To contribute towards our interventions, visit:🌐: www.giftofthegivers.org/make-a-difference#GiftoftheGivers #MakeADifference #ForTheGreaterGood #31Years #ServingHumanity#HungerAlleviation #AgriculturalSupport #Malawi ... At just 16 years old, Blandina M’baluku from T/A Chiswe in Blantyre has taken on the enormous responsibility of being the sole guardian to her three siblings, including her 8-month-old sister. Their world was shattered when their mother succumbed to a brief illness related to high blood pressure earlier this year, and to add to their woes, their father abandoned them soon after.Life became an uphill battle for Blandina as she engaged in casual labour to feed her siblings and cover their rent. However, amidst the challenges, a ray of hope emerged during one of the under-5 clinic visits to Bangwe Health Center. Blandina and her youngest sibling caught the attention of one of the HSAs at Bangwe, who introduced them to Gift of the Givers. In a heartfelt response to the children's needs, Gift of the Givers extended a helping hand, delivering essentials such as maize flour, soya pieces, cooking oil, tinned fish, tablets of soap, clothes, shoes, baby diapers, and blankets. Moreover, the organization ensured stability by covering their rent for two months. Currently collaborating with YONECO and Child Services, Gift of the Givers is actively working to reunite Blandina's family back in the village.Blandina's story is a testament to resilience, and together, we can make a difference in the lives of those facing adversity. 🤝💚To contribute towards our interventions, visit:🌐: www.giftofthegivers.org/make-a-difference#GiftoftheGivers #MakeADifference #ForTheGreaterGood #31Years #ServingHumanity#HealthCare #HungerAlleviation #Malawi ... In the spirit of compassion and generosity, our Zakat Project, a vital part of our Hunger Alleviation efforts, continues to make a positive impact on the lives of deserving Muslim families in Malawi. At Gift of the Givers, we understand the pressing challenge of hunger that grips underprivileged communities, where accessing a decent meal a day can be an arduous task. This January, as many Malawians are facing hunger due to food insecurity, we are thrilled to share that our Zakat Food Distribution project reached 883 families in Blantyre, Zomba, Mangochi and Machinga Districts. Our target areas are Muslim majority communities, however, needy non Muslim families also receive a food pack under the hunger alleviation project. Patuma Ngalawa, an elderly woman from Kumbewe, expressed her gratitude, saying, "Alhamdulillah! May the almighty ALLAH reward Gift of the Givers for the continuous support. As Gift of the Givers, our commitment to alleviating hunger in communities remains unwavering. The stark reality of families going to bed hungry, surviving on meager food like Mangoes and Cassava, underscores the daily hardships faced by many Malawians. We recently had the honor of bringing immense joy to the community of Gomani, T/A Kunthembwe in Chileka, through a crucial food pack donation reaching 100 beneficiaries. This act of compassion was complemented by the distribution of clothing items and shoes, extending warmth and comfort to those in need. The day in Gomani concluded with a hot meal distribution, with the support from One Nation we distributed 200 hot meals under One Nation's Jumma Feed project in Malawi. The items distributed included essentials like 10 kg packs of cream of maize, soya pieces, salt, soap, men’s shorts and shirts, ladies’ shoes, ladies’ tops, and scarves.Margret Hamitoni, a 60-year-old beneficiary, expressed her gratitude, saying, “I am so happy that we have been remembered like this today. I will be going to bed with a full stomach now that I have some food. There are days we go to bed on an empty stomach, but our story has changed today because of Gift of the Givers. Thank you for your unwavering kindness.”Together we can make a difference :🌐:https://giftofthegivers.org/make-a-difference#GiftoftheGivers #MakeADifference#ForTheGreaterGood #31YearsofServingHumanity#HungerAlleviation #OneNationUk #Malawi ... At Gift of the Givers, we stand committed to helping institutions like Kamwendo Islamic Center in Phalombe overcome challenges and provide a nurturing environment for vulnerable children and youth in Malawi. Last month, we took a step forward in supporting the incredible work of Kamwendo Islamic Centre by donating essential food items, clothing, and kitchen supplies. The centre plays a pivotal role in the lives of 50 boys aged 10 to 18, offering them shelter, daily meals, and crucial educational support. However, facing limited resources, they've encountered challenges in providing enough food and accommodation. Gift of the Givers stepped in to address some of these needs by providing significant support.Sheikh Abdul Karim Hamid Kamwendo, the Centre's founder, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the donation, highlighting how it will significantly improve the lives of these children and older boys.“The major challenge here at the centre, was the food and now, we will be able to feed the children adequately for the next few weeks. May Allah continue to reward Gift of the Givers for all their kindness,” said Kamwendo. The donation included essentials such as clothes for the boys, maize flour, soya pieces, cooking oil, tinned fish, soap, and cooking pots.Together we can make a difference:🌐: www.giftofthegivers.org/make-a-difference#GiftoftheGivers #MakeADifference #FortheGreaterGood #31YearsOfServingHumanity#HungerAlleviation #FoodParcels #Malawi ... At Gift of the Givers, we are devoted to advocating for young people’s education in Malawi, we believe that hunger should never stand in the way of education. Our unwavering dedication to supporting students continues through our monthly food assistance program for students facing financial constraints.Partnering with Munazzamat al Dawah al Islamia (MADA) schools, including Asalaam Girls and Al Bakir Boys Boarding Secondary Schools, we provide essential monthly food packs containing 800kgs of maize flour and 450kgs of rice. These students face significant financial hurdles, with over 30% unable to pay school fees, making our intervention crucial.Last December, we were honoured to have Dr. Ahmed Mohamed Adam, the Secretary General for MADA, present at our distribution exercise. Dr. Ahmed acknowledged Gift of the Givers Foundation for the provisions and requested for more support as their funding has significantly been reduced due to the fighting in Sudan, the country where its headquarters used to be before the war broke. For three years, Gift of the Givers has been a beacon of hope, supporting approximately 580 students with basic food items. Our aim goes beyond providing meals; it's about ensuring no student goes to bed hungry. By addressing their nutritional needs, we contribute to their overall health and wellbeing, empowering them to focus on their studies and thrive academically.Education is a fundamental right, and through nourishment, we pave the way for these students to grasp that right with both hands. We firmly believe that every individual deserves an equal opportunity to education and a promising future. To contribute towards our interventions, visit:🌐: www.giftofthegivers.org/make-a-difference#GiftoftheGivers #MakeADifference #FortheGreaterGood #31YearsOfServingHumanity#HungerAlleviation #FoodParcels #Malawi ...
